Daily Devotion of Proverbs 2

Daily Nugget:
In Proverbs 1, Solomon revealed that the beginning of obtaining wisdom is to reverence, respect, and regard the Lord (Proverbs 1:7) and His commandments. This trust in God is referred to as “the fear of the Lord.”

Trusting in the Lord and His guidance is further expounded in Proverbs 2. After hearing His words from the Bible or sources referencing it, they will often be stored (“hide”) in the back of one’s mind and accessed when needed.
“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;” Prov. 1:1

However, if one never hears or reads God’s words, there will be no wisdom to apply when required. It is so vital that one pays close attention to God’s Words so that it can be learned and used in the future.
“So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Prov. 1:2

Many “hear” God’s wisdom, but it makes little difference in their lives. They are still led by their own foolishness and not guided by God’s wisdom. Mistakes and regrets are much a part of their lifestyles. Perhaps it does not change their lives because they really were not looking for wisdom in the first place. They may be content in their spiritual blindness.
“Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;” Prov. 2:3

It amazes me how people are so different. Two can be sitting together during good Bible preaching. One listens and is drastically affected by what he has heard. His intent is to make changes in his life as soon as possible. The other listener is not affected at all. There is no conviction, nor any desire to apply what is heard in his life. It seems that the message went in one ear and tumbled onto the floor. Usually, the difference is because one recognized his weakness and error, but the other did not. It seems his “heart” is indifferent and not seeking wisdom at all.
“If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;” Prov. 2:4

Seeking, hearing, trusting, AND obeying the Word of God can make a big difference in one’s life. Those actions are the key to having the mind (I Cor. 2:16) and wisdom of Christ. With His understanding, one’s life will be much different and will be pleasing to one’s self and to the Lord.
“Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” Prov. 2:5

A Quick Look at Proverbs 2:
One must look for wisdom: (vss. 1-5).
The Lord gives wisdom: (vs. 6).
The advantage of His gift of wisdom: (vss. 7-9).
His wisdom changes one’s life: (vss. 10-19).
The result of accepting or rejecting His wisdom: (vss. 20-22).

Today’s Thought:
“The intellect of the wise is like glass; it admits the light of Heaven and reflects it.” — Hare

Words to Understand:
Buckler: a small shield used in sword-to-sword combat
Discretion: being discreet; being careful what is said or revealed

Today’s Reading:
Proverbs 2
1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
10 ¶ When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
