Daily Devotion in Psalm 146

 

Daily Nugget:
“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” Psalm 146:3

Most look for their country’s leaders to bring change, prosperity, safety, and peace to their nation. In my lifetime, two American leaders have improved those situations. Presidents Reagan and Trump are those leaders, but their love and help for their country are only temporary. Others followed that have not America’s best interest in their decision-making. Politicians (“princes”) will always let many down because they are only human, have their agendas, and often make mistakes.

However, One wants to be a leader in everyone’s life. He is not concerned with one’s race, sex, financial credibility, or history. He wants to be the trusted Leader in everyone’s life. The One that wants what is best for you is none other than the holy God of Heaven. As mighty as He is, God is concerned and cares for everyone.

There is nothing He can gain from any of us. God has it all and has made it all. He is not like the many (“sons of man”) that often only befriend or are kind to us because they want something you have or can give them.
“Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:” Psalm 146:5

Not only can God be trusted, but He offers much to those that will love Him and rely on Him. God will bring those that turn to Him for guidance: happiness (Psalm 146:5), help (Psalm 145:5), hope (Psalm 145:5), truthfulness (Psalm 145:6), provisions for the hungry (Psalm 145:7), deliverance from bondage (Psalm 145:7), understanding (“openeth the eyes of the blind” — Psalm 145:8), lessened burdens (“raiseth them that are bowed down” — Psalm 145:8), protection for many that are not even the children of God (“preserveth the strangers” — Psalm 145:9), relief to the “fatherless and widow” (Psalm 145:9), and judgment to the wicked (Psalm 145:9).

God is the one that all should trust. He is much better than any of us deserve, and He loves us despite knowing all about us! Governments and people will fail us too often, but God never will. As the chapter begins and ends with praising our mighty God, so should we.

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.
3 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
5 ¶ Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:
6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:
8 The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:
9 The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.
10 The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.
