Daily Devotion of Psalm 149

Daily Nugget:
“Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.” Psalm 149:1 Read also: Psalm 33:3, 40:3, 96:1, 98:1, 144:19.

Although focuses are different in New and Old Testament times, both involved living by faith. When putting faith and obedience in God, something similar happened to Old Testament saints as it does for believers today. All became different people. They had a “new song” in their lives. New goals, desires, and allegiances proved they were children of God. All that are born-again today certainly are not perfect, but they all should be able to testify that they are not the same person they were before salvation.

When Jesus becomes one’s Saviour, the Holy Spirit indwells the believer. The Holy Spirit is just that; it is Holy, and it wants the new child of God to strive for holy living.

After the Spirit of God comes into one’s life, it desires to make changes in one’s lifestyle. For some, conviction urges one to halt their lying lips; for others, it may be a yearning to go to church, read the Bible, pray, changing “friends” that encourage ungodliness, and all are urged to stop or stay far from sin.

All can know they are saved when they see they are a “new creature” in Christ. We are made a different person in the inside, and it often affects our outside appearance, lifestyle, and thinking.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Cor. 5:17
“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.” Gal. 6:15
“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” Rom. 8:9

Although others may not see the spiritual, inward changes in one’s life, the child of God should clearly see the difference. You may claim to be a Christian, but can you honestly say that you are a different, new creature since you trusted Christ as your Saviour?

Today’s Thought:
“What we mean by salvation is this: deliverance from the love of sin, rescue from the habit of sin, setting free from the desire to sin.” — Spurgeon

Words to Understand:
Zion: Jerusalem

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 149
1 ¶ Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 ¶ Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
