Daily Devotion of Psalm 115

Daily Nugget:
The heathen in early Israel plagued God’s people, as they do today throughout the world. Out of their ignorance, then and now, they taunt “Where is now their God?” (Psalm 115:2). They believe their lack of believing in God is because He is not “seen,” at least by them.

However, their “religion” is not proven by sight or experience. The ungodly may have made themselves idols to worship, as in Biblical days and even today, but they have no proof of their deity’s power and being alive. Perhaps their lavish false gods or religions may be impressive with rich beauty (Psalm 115:4), but their worship is man-made and false.

Many false religions, particularly idolatry, may exhibit human traits, but their “god” is only a figment of man’s imaginative creation (Psalm 115:4). It cannot speak (Psalm 115: 5), see (Psalm 115:5), hear (Psalm 115:6), smell (Psalm 115:6), touch (Psalm 115:7), and cannot walk (Psalm 115:7). Some religions that claim to have one deity, also have to admit whom they worship never has shown anyone the seven senses and abilities that God has given to man. False hope is put in a false “god.”

The unknown author of this hymn reminded Israel, although the deity the heathen worshipped showed no life or spiritual power, the God of Israel did make Himself apparent and real. While the idols the heathen worshipped had none of the physical attributes their deity displayed, the God in Heaven has all those. God does speak, see, hear, smell, touch, and is mobile.

Where heathen worship had seven false hopes in their “god,” God also has at least seven proofs of being a living God:

  1. He is their help (Psalm 115:9-10).
  2. He is their shield (Psalm 115:9-10).
  3. He will bless (Psalm 115:12) the nation.
  4. He will bless those serving God, including the Aaronic priesthood (Psalm 115:12).
  5. He will bless those that respect the Lord (Psalm 115:13, 15).
  6. He will increase the people of God (Psalm 115:14).
  7. He has given the Earth and all it entails to mankind (Psalm 115:16).

The lost, with a “religion” of their own making, never experience what God has done for and to His people. Although many may be duped into believing their worship is real, it often may be just a demonic deception to get many to deny the Lord and never be familiar with what the real God can do in one’s life. The ungodly may convince themselves their focus of worship is real; however, the Christian sees and experiences God’s reality and goodness in their lives, often on a regular basis.

Today’s Thought:
“God is like oxygen. You can't see God, but you need Him to live.” — Author Unknown

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 115
1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.
2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:
6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.
9 ¶ O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
12 The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.
14 The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.
15 Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth.
16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.
17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.
