Daily Devotion of Psalm 97

Daily Nugget:
Psalm 97 is accredited to Jesus’ futuristic, millennial (1,000 years) reign. Now God reigns from above, but there will be a time when Jesus rules from a throne in Jerusalem.
“The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.” Psalm 97:1

This Psalm gives an amazing picture of the power and majesty of Jesus as He will reign on this Earth. Today, too many view the Lord with little respect and honor. However, after reading the description of the power and might He will emanate, it certainly should change how many see the Lord.

We read that at that time, the:

  • Lord should make even those in faraway lands (“isles”) glad (vs. 1). Finally, the Earth will have a worthy ruler.
  • Lord’s throne will be a fearsome place surrounded by clouds and darkness (vs. 1).
  • Lord will judge righteously from His throne (vs. 2).
  • Lord will have fire before Him, and it will destroy His enemies (vs. 3). This verse makes one believe it is speaking of His millennial reign, as there are no enemies in Heaven.
  • Lord’s power will cause lightning to come from his place of governing. The Earth will tremble at His display of power and might (vs. 4). Again, this makes it clear that this Scripture is referring to Jesus’ earthly reign.
  • Presence of the Lord will change the landscape of the Earth (vs. 5).
  • Heavens will announce Jesus’ righteousness, and His Glory will be seen by all (vs. 6).

Today, God and His Son are cursed and ridiculed by foolish people that do not know who He is. The situation will one day change. Jesus’ upcoming reigning presence will demand righteousness, and holiness will be the standard. This Earth will finally be ruled by a worthy leader.

Word to Understand:
Isles: small islands; faraway lands

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 97
1 ¶ The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
8 ¶ Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.
9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
