Daily Devotion in Psalm 110

Daily Nugget:
A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” Psalm 110:1

The first verse in the prophetic Psalm 110 makes an interesting statement: “The LORD said unto my Lord …”. “LORD” refers to Jehovah, the Almighty. The other “Lord” refers to a divine controller and master, but who is that “Lord”? Psalm 110 defines who the “Lord” is.

The other “Lord” is Jesus, as scriptures indicate:

  • Jesus is often referred to as sitting at the right hand of His Father, God.
"This Jesus hath God raised up … 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted … 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.” Acts 2:32-35

In Acts 2, we see Jesus is sitting at God’s right hand until God makes his enemies Jesus’ footstool. The verses in Acts 2 even quotes parts of Psalm 110. Hebrews 1:13 also mentions part of Psalm 110:1. It declares that the One sitting on the Father's right hand is not an angel, leaving the reader believing it is Jesus.
  • Psalm 110:2 states that Jehovah will bless Jesus as he rules from the throne in Jerusalem (“Zion”). It is now clear that it is talking about Christ’s ruling for 1,000 years during His millennial reign. Also: Psalm 110:5.
  • Psalm 110:4 indicates that during the millennium, Jesus will be the High Priest, as was the Old Testament priest, Melchizedek. Also: Heb. 5:5-6, Heb. 6:19-20, Heb. 7:21-22, Heb. 10:11-13

To learn more about Melchizedek, read the Hebrew 7 devotion at http://www.devotionsfromthebible.com/dvblog/hebrews/daily-devotional-in-hebrews-7/
  • Psalm 110:6 further proves that the second “Lord” is Jesus, as He will judge during His reign. Throughout the Word of God, it also prophesied that when Christ returns, He will rule from Jerusalem.
“He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.” Psalm 110:6

After examining the chapter’s verses and the details each verse gives, we see Psalm 110 refers to Christ’s Millennial Reign. This chapter re-states the prophecy about Jesus’ return when He will rule the Earth righteously!

Words to Understand:
Melchizedek: “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.” Gen. 14:18

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 110
1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
5 ¶ The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
