Daily Devotion of Psalm 145

Daily Nugget:
“One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. 5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works….” Psalm 145:4-7
One reason the Word of God was preserved is mentioned in Psalm 145:4. It was kept intact so that future generations would know what God has done. His great works were recorded so they could be shared in the future.

  • God wants all to know what He has done for His people. That is why the genealogies have peppered the pages of the Bible. God wants us to understand who our ancestors were and what they did, so we would not repeat any of the sins and mistakes they have done. God also wants us aware of our godly forefathers and how He blessed them.
  • God wants future generations to know the promises and covenants He has made with His people.
“And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.” Gen. 17:7 Also: Gen. 9:12.
  • God wants future generations to know His commandments and wisdom.
“The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” Psalm 33:11
  • God wants future generations to recall the victories God has given His people.
“And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.” Exodus 12:17
  • God wants future generations to remember the mighty things God has done.
“And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt...” Ex. 16:32-33 Also: Leviticus 23:43.
“Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?” Matthew 16:9
“He [Jesus] is is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee.” Luke 24:6
  • God wants future generations to recall their sin.
“And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the LORD.” Ex. 30:10 Also: Numbers 15:38.
    “Remember Lot's wife.” Luke 17:32

God has done His part in helping us know what happened and what He has done in the past. Now, it is our responsibility to pass it on. Future generations will not know about our great God and what He has done unless believers tell others.

Today’s Thought:
“One taper [candle] lights a thousand, yet shines as it has shone; and the humblest light may kindle one brighter than its own.” — Butterworth

Words to Understand:
Covenants: agreements; promises
Extol: praising

Today’s Reading
Psalm 145
1 David's Psalm of praise. I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.
2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.
6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.
7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
10 ¶ All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.
11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;
12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.
13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.
14 The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.
16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
18 The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
20 The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.
21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.
