Daily Devotion of Psalm 131

Daily Nugget:
King David, in Psalm 131, describes what made him so different from other leaders and many citizens. Although David had wealth and power, he was a humble man. He did what so many today need to do. The leader was subservient to God’s will and way. He obeyed and followed His Lord, as a small child would mind his parent (Psalm 131:2) — faithfully and trustingly.
“Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4

Unfortunately, when most do well financially and position-wise, they allow their success to go to their heads. Too many believe they are more than they are.

We are all sinners. None of us deserve what we are allowed to have and experience in this life. It was only by God’s grace and mercy that David was blessed with all he had. It is also by the same grace that we have or have accomplished anything.

We are no different than David. Despite education, wealth, experience, or power, we disappoint our Heavenly Father and too often break His commandments. None of us deserve anything, but because of God’s love and mercy, He often trusts us with more than we deserve.

Be grateful and humble with what you have and what you have done. You have what you have only because of God’s graciousness. Never forget that!

Today’s Thought:
“True humility is not an abject, groveling, self-despising spirit; it is but a right estimate of ourselves as God sees us.” — Edwards

Words to Understand:
Haughty: prideful; one who thinks highly of himself
Lofty: one who has high, often unrealistic, plans for himself

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 131
1 A Song of degrees of David. LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.
