Daily Devotion of Psalm 124

Daily Nugget:
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:” Psalm 124:2

In Psalm 124, the Psalmist recognizes how Israel had often been victorious. Here, the hymn-writer reminded his people how God’s people were delivered from the Egyptians, as they fled the Pharaoh’s wrath. It was not their strength, ingenuity, wisdom, or riches that were used to rescue them from overwhelming odds. It was God that delivered them.

Those in this church-age also can credit the same Deliverer for his merciful help in their time of need. If it was not for God’s help, most of us would still be in a valley of despair with little help of being pulled out of it.

Most, when asked, can readily recall answered prayers and God’s help at the right time. Just imagine if those prayers were unheard. The same plague of powerlessness would still be prevailing. We would still be stuck or stopped because we had no help to pull us out of the ditch of distress, but the Lord helped us overcome it.

Can you imagine not having the Lord? There would be no one to cry-out for help and understanding when no one else would care enough to listen. When danger surrounds us, there would be no one to rely on for deliverance. No hope for changes would be available when a fearful prognosis was given to us by our doctor. Who would we go to when we desperately have physical or emotional needs? Thank you, Lord, for being “on our side,” especially in our time of need!

Today’s Thought:
“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side for God is always right.” — Author Unknown

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 124
1 A Song of degrees of David. If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
