Daily Devotion of Psalm 114

Daily Nugget:
Previously, in the last several Psalms, there was an emphasis on praising God. One of the ways to praise God properly is to give Him credit for what He has done in the past. Psalm 114 does that. It reminds the singer of this hymn some of the great things God has done for His people in the past.

In this Hebrew song, the mighty things God has done for his people, Israel, have been rehearsed. It reminds the singers that:

  • God freed Israel from their bondage in Egypt (Psalm 114:1).
  • God was close to His people (Psalm 114:2), and they worshiped Him.
  • God parted the Red Sea during Moses’ leadership and again when Joshua led Israel through the Jordan River (Psalm 114:3 ).
  • God led them over obstacles, as mountains (Psalm 114:4-6).
  • God even shook the Earth, showing His power to Israel and several times in disciplining sin.
  • God did the impossible for His people many times, including providing water from a rock.

We should not only remember what God has done for His people in the past but in our lives also. I challenge Christians to write down what God has done for you in the past. Include in the list answers to prayer, His changing “impossible situations”, and His interventions in your life. When there is a time you feel all alone and forgotten, it will encourage and strengthen you that He can meet your needs again as He did in the past. Praising God can be a blessing to you, also.

Today’s Thought:
“Praise has different effects, according to the mind it meets with; it makes a wise man modest but a fool more arrogant.” — Feltham

Words to Understand:
Fleddest: flee
Sanctuary: sacred place; consecrated
Skipped: bounded off or away

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 114
1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2 Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.
3 The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.
5 What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
8 Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
