Daily Devotion of Psalm 112

Daily Nugget:
Previously in Psalm 111, it ended with stating the importance of “fearing” the Lord (Psalm 11:10). Chapter 112 continues with reasons for making it a priority in reverencing and respecting our God.

Those that honor the Lord in faith and obedience to what the preserved Word of God tells a Christian to do will have a changed life. Psalm 112 states many of those blessings and special treatment God will do in an obedient believer’s life. They include:

  • Being blessed (Psalm 112:1). God will do things in one’s life that the ungodly will never experience. It is worth it all to love and follow the Lord’s commandments.
  • A believer’s family and the following generations will also be blessed (Psalm 112:2). I remember reading at least one study over many decades. One followed the generations of a godly and obedient believer. Many in that person’s life were blessed by being used by God. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren also were blessed by being preachers, doctors, and were a great help to society.
“His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.” Psalm 112:2
The study also observed the offspring of a criminal and found that not only was the parent in jail, but his children and succeeding were also law-breakers, drunkards, and a burden to society rather than a help.
“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” Ex. 20:5

Being blessed by God also continues up one’s family tree, and not having His blessing may negatively affect one’s future generations.
  • Being blessed financially and materially (Psalm 112:3).
  • “Clipping coupons” for one’s standing his ground and living righteously (Psalm 112:3).
  • Having a better attitude and seeing the good in even “bad” situations (Psalm 112:4).
  • Being a blessing and encouragement to those around an obedient believer (Psalm 112:4-5, 9).
  • Having wisdom in making life decisions (Psalm 112:5).
  • Being steadfast and sure-footed while amidst tribulations and being among people with no purpose or guidance. (Psalm 112:6-8).
  • Being remembered by his excellent testimony (Psalm 112:6).
  • Being a convicting source to those that live an ungodly life (Psalm 112:10).

Without a doubt, a faithful, obedient believer will have God’s hand on his life. There indeed will be trials and tribulations, but God will direct and bless one’s earthly walk. It is worth it all to be faithful and submissive to God’s leading.

Today’s Thought:
“Obedience to God is the most infallible evidence of sincere and supreme love for Him.” — Emmons

Words to Understand:
Exalted: Rewarded; elevated

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 112
1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 ¶ Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
