Daily Devotion of Psalm 27

Daily Nugget:
One of the most devastating and crippling human emotions is fear. All have fears be they rich, poor, young, old, weak, or strong. There is something frightful to everyone.

As powerful, wealthy, and a strong leader as King David was, there were also some circumstances that he could have feared. However, we learn why he was not afraid of them in this Psalm and how they were handled.

  • He was not afraid of the unknown and overpowering because the Lord was His strength — Psalm 27:1. God had proven to David that the leader was safe under His care.
  • In the past, David observed that those that went against the ruler were stopped by His God. They “stumbled and fell” (vss. 2-3).
  • He had learned the God often hid him from danger (vs. 5).
  • Even when his own family turned against him, David saw God’s intervention in his life (vs. 10).
  • David would not have had the strength and faith he did if he did not repeatedly see God helping him (vs. 13).

Instead of cowering fearfully far away from what the King perceived as a danger, he was confident and encouraged because he knew what God had done in the past and what He would do in the future. David was safe and secure in God’s hands, and so is today’s believer. We are in His good hands.

It will be okay, Christian pilgrim. You are just passing through this world, but you are not alone. God is no more than a prayer whisper away. He will protect, provide, and procure what you need. Just wait on His timing (vs. 14).
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” Psalm 27:14

Today’s Thought:
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isa. 41:10

Words to Understand:
Pavilion: a protected place
Tabernacle: A place of worship for only God’s people. Those that were not God’s were not allowed to enter. It was a place for His believers only.

Today’s Reading:
Psalm 27
1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
7 ¶ Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
